Comprehensive water system upgrade for a commercial nursery, including a full supply renewal, a 200-metre MDPE ring main installation, custom standpipes, and environmentally sensitive works completed on a live public site.
Site survey & recommendation
- Nursery owner reported poor and inconsistent water pressure across the site
- Existing supply was a long run of ageing barrel pipe and early black MDPE, both brittle and heavily corroded
- Pressure dropped significantly during high-demand periods, affecting irrigation efficiency and day-to-day operations
- Full upgrade recommended, replacing the entire supply and installing a new ring main to balance pressure
Installation & access
- Ring main configured to provide equal distribution to all outlets
- Approximately 200 metres of new MDPE pipework installed
- Trenchless moling used on long, clear sections, with open excavation where routing was more complex
- Multiple custom-built standpipes fitted at strategic points, assembled on site and mounted to galvanised steel posts
Environmental & site management
- Moling routes planned to avoid major root zones of mature trees on the grounds
- Air lance tools used to carefully expose and protect roots where excavation was needed nearby
- Safety barriers, controlled work zones and clear signage used throughout, as the nursery remained open to the public
Results
All excavations were backfilled in layers and compacted to prevent future settlement. Turf, gravel paths, and planting areas were reinstated to their original condition, leaving the nursery fully restored.
The completed 200-metre ring main was pressure-tested, commissioned, and handed over fully operational. The new system now provides reliable, balanced pressure across the entire site and complies with all UK Water Regulations.
